Lazarus, back from the dead.

Reading: John 11:1-54

Key Verse: John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’

This is the third resurrection that Jesus has administered. Jairus daughter raised to life shortly after she had died, then stopping the funeral procession on the way to bury an only son of a widow from Nairn. Now with Jesus’ friend Lazarus the time span between death and resurrection has increased to 4 days.

Jesus does not use His power to roll away the stone or unwrap Lazarus, but involves other people. The resurrection itself is spectacular miracle yet it’s purpose, as with all his miracles, is not to be a spectacle but a sign which authenticates Jesus claims, which in this case was “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” Then people can believe in Jesus based on evidence.

Jesus humanity is shown as he experiences the pain of the death of his friend, but in the execution of the miracle His Divinity is shown. Mary & Martha still looked to Jesus even though they thought all hope was gone.
