The Official’s Son

Rosskeen Free Church Sermons

Reading: John 4:43-54

Key Verse: John 4:50 ‘Go,’ Jesus replied, ‘your son will live.’The man took Jesus at his word and departed.

In 1859 Charles Blondin crossed the Niagara Gorge. The audience when asked believed he could safely carry them across in a wheelbarrow, but none where prepared to actually get into the wheelbarrow. This illustrates the difference between accepting truths about God and trusting your very life to God trusting in what He has said.

The unnamed nobleman found Jesus a days uphill jounery away and begged for the healing of his son. Jesus replied by addressing the issue of belief and signs. Upon the nobleman’s repeated plea Jesus heals the boy with a word “Go your son will live.” The nobleman taking Jesus at His word, departed in faith.

The critical aspect of faith is not the strength of our faith but the object of our faith. All people have faith. It requires faith to believe there is no God, since His existence cannot be disproved. Faith in God alone is what brings life.

Water into Wine: The first sign

Rosskeen Free Church Sermons

Reading: John 2:1-12

Key Verse: John 20:30-31 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

The Apostle John wrote with the clear purpose that the reader would be convinced about the identity of Jesus. Evidence pointing to Jesus being the Messiah (aka Christ) and the incarnate Son of God.

Jesus did many miracles in his earthly ministry starting with the miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding of Cana, but John records significant ones which each authentic, in different ways, what Jesus proclamations about himself.

This miracle at a family wedding anticipates Jesus heavenly wedding as the groom marrying the church, His bride.
