The Big Story

Reading: Luke 2:1-20 and Genesis 3:1-24

Key Verse: Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’

Luke 2:6-7 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

There is the saying “cannot see the wood for the trees”. Often we are like that when we study in detail verses or chapters of the bible without knowing where they fit in. So it is with the events of the first advent. We can listen the story of Christ’s birthday without grasping the wonder of it because we forget to set the events within local historical context and the wider bible context of salvation.

The whole bible is one big story with many interwoven themes but with the main theme being how God in love reaches out to his creatures who have rebelled against him, warning them of their situation, showing them their helplessness, but providing himself as their saviour, if only they would repent and believe.
