The Song of Moses

exodus_banner_2

Reading: Exodus 15:1-21

Key Verse: Exodus 15:1
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
‘I will sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.’

It might seem strange to have all these action narratives and then a song, but God has included it in Holy Scripture because it sets out the principle. The principle that the correct reaction to the acts of God are praise and worship.

Sermon Points:

A: The Praise of God
In our praise we are declaring God’s worth.
In our praise we are refocusing our attention on God.
1: Personal praise
2: Passionate praise

B: The Person of God

Reading: Exodus 13:17-14:31

Key Verse: Exodus 14:13 -14
Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.’

In the Batman trilogy, Bruce Wayne/Batman does not want anybody to know he is batman so creates a false exterior of a playboy billionaire. But this false image is off putting to his true love Rachel Dawes. He says to Rachel “everything you see here is not me, inside I’m different, inside I’m more” but she replies “It’s not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you.” In a similar way in the book of Exodus God is revealing who he is by his actions.
Egypt has been levelled by the 10 plagues and following the last plague of death, where the angel of death passed over the children of Israel, they have been set free. Now God is leading them out.

Reading: Exodus 3:1-22

Key Verse: Exodus 3:15
God also said to Moses, ‘Say to the Israelites, “The LORD, the God of your fathers – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob – has sent me to you.”
‘This is my name for ever,
the name you shall call me
from generation to generation.

The book of Exodus is basically split into two halves. The actual exodus from Egypt and then the creation of the tabernacle in all its details. The Tabernacle, visualises God coming to dwell with his people. For the first time since Eden God comes to live with his people – but there are still barriers.

Exodus is a picture of what Jesus is going to do spiritual, but rather than being set free from physically slaved, and a physically tabernacle Jesus sets free from sin and death, and comes via the Holy Spirit to live directly in our lives.

God reveals himself in the fire, proclaiming He is YHWH (Yahweh) “I AM”
