Reading: Matthew 5:1-12
Key Verse: Matthew 5:3 ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’
The first 17 verses of chapter 5 deals with Christian character, while from verse 18 to end of chapter 7 deals with conduct.
The emphasis in Matthew’s gospel is Jesus as King. Christians are (5:1-17) children of the King and as such should act (5:18-7:29) in a royal manner. Trying to act in a royal manner does not make you a royal, but a member of the royal household should always act royally.
Blessed are those who see their need for God. Peace flows from humble spirit submitted to God.
