Reading: Matthew 3:13-4:11
Key Verse: Matthew 3:16-17 As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ (NIVUK)
Our baptism is a symbol of the washing away of sin, sin taken away at CalvaryHis baptism is a symbol of being covered in our sin, placed upon Jesus at Calvary.
Jesus in his baptism identified with sinners, so he could be our substitute. After the substitution of our guilt for his guiltless life, and our sin for his righteousness, we need to be identify as belonging to Jesus through our baptism.
In the Fall God’s perfect creation fell under the curse. This world broken by sin, is pictured as groaning under the weight of war, murder, sickness, strife, greed, and every kind of evil.
In the beginning the Trinity was at work creating the creation. Also at Jesus baptism the Trinity is seen at work. The beginnings of a new creation begun, which upon completion will experiance peace, safety, no suffering, no sadness nor tears, but worship of God in holy perfection.
