Reading: Luke 12:1-12
Key Verses: Luke 12:1b Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.’
Luke 12:4-5 ‘I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.’
To fear God is the beginning of wisdom, but to fear man is to be enslaved.
The Pharisees feared the opinions of their fellows. They only possessed a hypocritical false piety rather than real piety. Jesus warned against this corrupting hypocrisy saying that the only person you should really fear is God, since man can only do limited harm, while God has the power to determine our eternal destiny.
The Pharisees’ stubborn deliberate resistance to the Truth brought condemnation, but we should not only follow Jesus but be willing to confess him openly before men as God the Holy Spirit enables us.
