Jesus gives the warning that people must not only hear but also accept and act upon His teachings if they are to receive the gift of eternal life and be saved from eternal damnation.
The immediate context in Jesus teaching is His warning that there are people who outwardly look the same as Christians, and sincerely believe themselves to be Christians, without actually being Christians. On the day of judgement they will pled they religious activities as evidence of their Christianity, yet they will be banished from His presence because they trusted in their “Christian” activities rather than trusting in Jesus’ actions and His promises.
In the light of this danger of false Christianity and false hope, Jesus uses the parable of wise and foolish builders to make plain how get our response to His teachings about Himself has eternal consequences.
