The Official’s Son

Rosskeen Free Church Sermons

Reading: John 4:43-54

Key Verse: John 4:50 ‘Go,’ Jesus replied, ‘your son will live.’The man took Jesus at his word and departed.

In 1859 Charles Blondin crossed the Niagara Gorge. The audience when asked believed he could safely carry them across in a wheelbarrow, but none where prepared to actually get into the wheelbarrow. This illustrates the difference between accepting truths about God and trusting your very life to God trusting in what He has said.

The unnamed nobleman found Jesus a days uphill jounery away and begged for the healing of his son. Jesus replied by addressing the issue of belief and signs. Upon the nobleman’s repeated plea Jesus heals the boy with a word “Go your son will live.” The nobleman taking Jesus at His word, departed in faith.

The critical aspect of faith is not the strength of our faith but the object of our faith. All people have faith. It requires faith to believe there is no God, since His existence cannot be disproved. Faith in God alone is what brings life.
