Reading: Luke 1:1-26

Dr Luke, after careful investigation speaking with eye witnesses, sets out his historical account of the life, death and reserection of Jesus. He starts his account with the background to the birth of John the Baptist, who was the last of the Old Testament prophets, and would be the forerunner of Jesus.
At just the right moment God fulfils his prophecies, bring the joy of parenthood to a barren couple, answering their prayers of long ago. God chooses to answer their prayer for a child while also answering the immediate prayer of Zacharias the priest as he prayed in the holy place within the temple for the redemption of Israel. Zacharias and Elizabeth’s son who would be named John and would be the forerunner of Jesus the redeemer of Israel and a light to the Gentiles.
