Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-2:5
Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5. And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
Billy Graham once told a story of an English policeman finding a small wet boy weeping in the dark because he was totally lost. The boy did not know his address, so the policeman tried naming local landmarks. Finally the policeman after naming various landmarks mention the church at the center of town with the large white cross. The boy’s face lit up and replied “If you take me to the cross I can find my way home.”
And does that not sum up, in a sense, the mission of the church. That’s what we are to do. To point people to the cross, and the cross will lead them home.
