The blind man

Rosskeen Free Church Sermons

Reading: John 9:1-41

Key Verse: John 9:5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world

John in his gospel uses contrasts – light/darkness, alive/dead, see/blind. In the previous chapter Jesus has declare that He is The Light of the world. He provides the disbelieving Pharisees a sign by bring light into the darkness of this man’s existence by healing him, born blind, and giving him sight.

The Pharisees could not deny the fact that the blind man could now see, so they unsuccessfully tried to deny he was ever blind, being deliberately wilful in their disbelief. They closed their eyes to God’s sign, loving the darkness rather than the light revealed in Jesus because their deeds where evil.

We by nature are like the Pharisees setting our own standards but when the light of the gospel shines in our hearts we recoil seeing ourselves as substandard against God’s standard of perfection. We need to be like the blind man knowing our need and accepting God’s provision.
