The Magnificent Seven

Rosskeen Free Church Sermons

Reading: Acts 6:1-7

Key Verse: Acts 6:2-4
So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, ‘It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’

The two groups of Greek Jews and Hebraic Jews had existed for a long time with the Hebraic Jews feeling superior to the Greek Jews. This attitude had unfortunately continued into the church with the Hebraic believers believing their widows should have priority.
To deal with the problem fairly need time and energy. Time and energy which the apostles did not have if they were also to fulfil their primary function of prayer and teaching. Therefore the church choose godly men who would give their time and energy to the social needs of the church. The apostles then delegated this function to the 7 men chosen commissioning them with the laying on of hands.
